The AI-Enabled Future of Wealth Management, with Spenser Segal (Author Chats)
Spenser Segal has been asking the same question since he founded Actifi in 2003: how do you get financial institutions and their advisors to deliver world-class integrated advice, more effectively and more profitably? For twenty years, the honest answer was that he mostly couldn't; the level of coordinated, multidisciplinary advice that families with a multifamily office pay six figures for was never going to reach the people who need it most. Spenser calls closing that gap his moonshot, and he now believes AI is the first genuine answer he's had to his own question.
He joins me for the first episode of a new segment, Author Chats, to talk about the book that took him sixteen months and 27 interviews (with people like Michael Kitces and Bob Veres) to write: The AI-Enabled Future of Wealth Management. We spend most of our time on the two ideas doing the most work in it. First, his line that a firm without clean, current client data is building a skyscraper on sand--and why the actual problem at most firms isn't bad data, it's missing data. Second, the idea of an agentic mesh: a set of specialized AI agents, each narrow enough to test and trust, coordinated by one orchestrator to prep an advisor for a client meeting before the advisor even opens a laptop Monday morning.
We also get into whether the 1% fee holds, what a firm's actual first move should look like, and the tagline Spenser built the whole book around: human-AI synergy at the speed and strength of trust.
In this episode
Why Spenser wrote the book, and the moonshot he's been chasing since founding Actifi in 2003: closing the gap between the sliver of people who get world-class integrated advice and everyone else
What writing the book actually took — sixteen months instead of the six to eight he expected, and 27 recorded interviews with technologists, advisors, and industry leaders along the way
The "family office paradox," and why AI is the first technology that can bring true balance-sheet-and-income-statement advice downmarket
Whether the 1% fee holds, and the four models of advice — from fully digital to family office — that Spenser thinks will define the next decade
The data foundation problem: why "skyscraper on sand" is less about bad data than missing data, and the four pieces of infrastructure firms actually need
Expert systems versus agentic mesh, explained through a walkthrough of AI agents prepping an advisor for a Friday client meeting
Why Spenser thinks trust, not tech budget, is the deciding factor in which firms win the next decade — and the first move a $500 million firm should make
